Most failures are undoubtedly user error and lack of experience and especially knowledge of the said pest.  

Simply throwing a bit of bait down or a quick spray with some insecticide may not solve your issue as quick as you intended, if at all.   Rodents have behavioural patterns and insects have multiple stages to their life cycle. Dependant on the insect will depend on how its treated and may take multiple treatments.

Understanding the insects/rodents makes treatment that much easier and less frustrating in your endeavours to control them.
